The Back Crackler

This early 20th-century contraption was a metal frame with rollers and levers designed to “crack” your back while you lay face down. Users hoped it would relieve tension and improve posture by realigning the spine through mechanical force.

Instead, many left with bruises, strained muscles, and worse back pain. The machine was loud, uncomfortable, and delivered unpredictable jolts that often made things worse instead of better. Chiropractors eventually replaced it with safer, manual adjustments, and the Back Crackler disappeared into fitness history.
