While clowns are generally seen as characters for kids, a surprising number of people suffer from coulrophobia (fear of clowns). This photo, showing a clown suddenly appearing in a field in Huntsville, Alabama, evokes a sense of inescapable dread. Back then, there was no real evidence of clowns actually causing harm, and it was largely considered a hoax.
