Sunshine Skyway Bridge (USA)

The Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa Bay, Florida, USA, bears a beautiful name, but it’s a bridge that has unfortunately seen its share of tragedy. The original bridge had issues with its design angles and actually collapsed once. Minor contact accidents had been occurring repeatedly, but these were overlooked. As a result, one stormy day, a freighter, unable to see clearly, crashed into a pier, causing a section of the bridge to collapse.

Learning from this accident, a new bridge opened in 1987. The newly constructed bridge was designed to be easily visible even from large ships, and to further enhance safety, an alarm system was introduced that automatically activates in the event of an emergency, immediately alerting users and the surrounding area. While you might feel uneasy given the serious accident that occurred in the past, the current bridge is considerably safer than it was back then.
