The Bucket War
In 1325, a group of Modenese soldiers stole a wooden bucket from a well in Bologna, Italy. Bologna, offended beyond reason, demanded its return. When Modena refused, Bologna declared war. Thousands of men marched to reclaim… a bucket. The two cities clashed in the Battle of Zappolino, with Modena emerging victorious.
The wooden bucket was proudly displayed in Modena like a trophy — and it’s still there in a museum today. This war proves medieval pride was a dangerous thing, especially when paired with an unusually beloved piece of plumbing.
