Cavities Were Attributed to Worms
Before dentistry advanced, many believed that toothaches were caused by tiny worms burrowing into the teeth. To “expel” them, people would fill their mouths with smoke, hoping the worms would escape into a bowl of hot water.
This superstitious remedy persisted for years, despite the complete lack of evidence. Fortunately, science eventually set the record straight, and the myth of the tooth worm disappeared.
