Burnt Herbs and Wine for Teeth Washing

Back in Victorian times, dental hygiene was anything but refreshing. People brushed their teeth with burnt herbs like rosemary, then rinsed with wine or vinegar. In some cases, they even used urine. So, it’s no wonder bad breath was a common issue.

Even though these methods might have had a partial effect, they were a far cry from replacing actual toothpaste. One can only imagine the conversations… unless you held your nose.
