Marquis de Sade’s Ink Made of… Blood
The infamous Marquis de Sade, known for his dark erotic writings, was imprisoned for much of his life. Deprived of ink and paper, he sometimes resorted to writing on bedsheets with his own blood. It was more than a survival strategy—it was a grotesque act of devotion to his art and ideology.
Guards confiscated his writings, but de Sade was relentless, describing it as “liberty written in pain.” Even his jailors feared his obsessive scribbling. Today, his name lives on in the word “sadism,” but his story reminds us that for some creators, the urge to express overrules the urge for self-preservation.
