Charles Dickens’ Bed Alignment Obsession
Charles Dickens could only sleep if his bed was perfectly aligned—facing north. He carried a compass when traveling and often rearranged hotel furniture to match his preferred “magnetic sleep flow.” He believed the orientation affected his creativity, health, and even his dreams.
While no science backed this claim, Dickens was convinced that the north-south axis channeled Earth’s energy into his writing brain. Staff at inns and friends’ homes learned not to question the nightly bed-shifting ritual. Perhaps it worked—Dickens wrote over a dozen classics. Or maybe it was just extreme literary feng shui.
