Human Skulls
As chilling as it sounds, some ancient cultures—like the Celts and certain tribes in Southeast Asia—used human skulls as a form of status currency. In warrior cultures, possessing the skull of a defeated enemy was a trophy of both valor and value. It signaled power, spiritual dominance, and could even be traded or gifted in rituals.
Some societies believed that owning skulls brought protection or blessings from the ancestors. Over time, certain skulls became heirlooms, passed down like antique coins. Though definitely not legal tender today (and wildly inappropriate), it shows how deeply cultural values influence what’s seen as “money.”
