Lime Burner
Lime burners produced quicklime by heating limestone in massive kilns. The resulting substance was used in construction, agriculture, and even burial practices. But it was highly caustic—touching it could burn flesh instantly.
The work was hot, toxic, and filled with accidents. Workers often had respiratory issues from inhaling the fumes. Though lime is still used today, modern safety standards and machines have thankfully eliminated the need for this brutal manual labor.
