Spreading Threat of Killer Ants
Fire ants are highly venomous ants, globally feared as “killer ants.” Their stings cause a burning pain, and in severe cases, can lead to anaphylactic shock, causing respiratory distress or life-threatening symptoms. In the United States, over 100 people are affected annually.
They were first discovered in Japan in 2017 and are believed to have arrived concealed in containers and cargo. Since then, their spread has also been confirmed in China, Australia, New Zealand, and other regions, warranting continued vigilance. Despite their small size, their potent venom and reproductive capacity pose a significant risk.
