Threat of Giant Centipedes

The Scolopendra subspinipes, also known as the giant centipede, is one of the largest centipede species in Japan, typically measuring 8 to 15 cm in length, with some individuals occasionally exceeding 20 cm. Widely distributed throughout the country, it frequently appears in residential gardens, fields, and warehouses, increasing opportunities for human contact. It is not uncommon for children to accidentally touch them.

This centipede possesses potent venom, and a bite can cause intense pain, accompanied by swelling and fever. Wearing shoes can reduce the risk of bites, but cases of pets being directly affected during walks have been reported. Particular caution is needed outdoors, especially during the summer months when their activity is heightened.
