Tapeworms
In nature, tapeworms primarily parasitize animals such as bears, foxes, dogs, and cats. However, they can also parasitize the human digestive system. In Japan, most infections come from fish. While most cases are mild and not life-threatening, some types can potentially be fatal.
When tapeworms cause death in humans, it’s usually because they migrate to places where they don’t normally reside, such as the brain. Don’t underestimate it by thinking, “That’s just a tiny fraction, isn’t it?” The annual number of deaths caused by tapeworms reaches approximately 700. Their unseen nature makes them terrifying in a way different from wild beasts.
