Black Caiman

The black caiman is a species of alligator belonging to the Alligatoridae family. Its maximum length is about 430 cm. Although it should originally exceed 600 cm, due to overhunting, such large specimens are rarely seen in recent years. As a result, their absolute numbers have decreased, and incidents of humans being attacked have also become less frequent. Black caimans typically have a docile nature, primarily feeding on fish.

Occasionally, they seem to desire a change in diet and may consume mammals that come to the water’s edge. While they can become aggressive when stimulated, they also exhibit a domestic side, such as building nests with plants. Unfortunately, their population is steadily declining because they are highly sought after for making bags and clothing. This decline has led to an increase in animals that prey on black caimans, resulting in more frequent attacks on farms and agricultural lands.
