There Were No Utensils
In the Middle Ages, forks weren’t common, and knives and spoons were also rare. Most people ate with their hands – which were hardly ever washed. Hygiene wasn’t a big concern, so every meal became a bacterial adventure.
Between the dirt under fingernails and shared dishes, it’s a wonder anyone survived the food at all. So, here’s to cutlery and soap!
