Mighty Putty

Imagine a green goo that can glue a broken coffee mug, hang a 350-pound shelf, and even tow a truck. That’s the gospel Mighty Putty preached, presented by the late Billy Mays in his booming inside-voice. The two-part epoxy stick activates when kneaded, then hardens “as strong as steel.” You could supposedly replace screws, fix plumbing leaks, or craft custom tools—all before your coffee cooled.

While Mighty Putty does harden, consumer tests showed it rarely meets those heroic weight claims. It bonds better to itself than to slick surfaces, so repaired mugs often leak and “screwless” hinges sag. And because it cures rock-solid, mistakes require chisels to undo. For tiny fixes it’s fine, but the high-octane infomercial set expectations at Marvel-superhero levels. Like many As-Seen-On-TV marvels, it works in theory—just not always on Earth.
