Axes and Hoe Money

In parts of Africa and early China, iron tools like hoes, axes, and spades were used as money—both figuratively and literally. They were often miniaturized and stylized, transforming tools into tokens of trade.

These tools symbolized agricultural productivity and survival. Having a handful of hoe-money was like carrying around a savings account—useful, transferable, and absolutely essential to rural life.
