Corn (Maize)
Among the ancient civilizations of Mesoamerica, corn wasn’t just a dietary staple—it was divine. Corn kernels were sometimes used to pay workers or trade for goods, especially during ritual periods. Specially prepared corn, like colored or roasted varieties, held symbolic value.
Corn was so vital that entire spiritual economies grew around it. Offerings of maize could appease gods or buy social favor. In many ways, it was the edible banknote of ancient agricultural societies.
