Funny Slip
While this looks unusual, it’s also strangely humorous. As unlikely as it seems, situations like this happen more often than you’d think. The boat in this picture is asloop. In ancient times, this was the most common type of pirate ship, designed for very fast sailing with masts swaying over the water.
Today, a modern sloop is a single-masted sailboat with a foresail and a mainsail. A Bermuda rig or gaff rig is what you typically find on these boats. This is also called a “fore-and-aft” rig because the sails are angled relative to the wind, rather than straight ahead. Depending on the style and number of foresails, a sloop can be classified as a cutter or catboat.
