Pam Grier (“Coffy”, 1973)

Born on May 26, 1949, Pam Grier is considered the first African-American female action star in cinema. Originally named Pamela Suzette Grier, she began starring in action films in the early 1970s. Grier rose to fame through roles in films like Coffy and Foxy Brown.

In Coffy, she plays a nurse who seeks revenge on the local drug dealers. Her character was described as “the toughest one-woman army that ever hit the street” and was heavily promoted in the film’s trailer. The film, which contains both sensual and violent elements, was a commercial success.
