#35: Uniforms Get Rotated, Not Washed

When water is precious, hygiene becomes negotiable. Submariners often cycle through just a few uniforms over long patrols, relying on air-drying, rotation, and sheer willpower to make it through. Laundry isn’t banned, but it’s reserved for emergencies due to water conservation.

The term “clean clothes” becomes relative—more about smell than sparkle. Some crews establish clothing caches: shared wardrobes that resemble a secondhand store crossed with military function. You wear what’s least offensive that day. Over time, everyone accepts the funk.
