Feather Hats (Plume Craze)
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, hats adorned with exotic bird feathers became the height of fashion. Some hats used entire birds, like hummingbirds or egrets. The demand led to mass bird killings, threatening several species with extinction.
Eventually, conservationists and fashion reformers pushed back. This led to the formation of groups like the Audubon Society. Laws were passed to protect endangered birds, but the feather trend showed how fashion can cause real environmental damage when left unchecked.
