Driving Into the Unknown
We ended up driving to a nearby lake, the trip surprisingly smooth and effortless. Alan handled the accessible van like he’d been doing it for years, every motion confident and practiced. “Looks like you’ve done this a time or two,” I joked, still a little stunned. He just gave a small shrug and smiled. “Been practicing,” he replied, almost proudly.
As we arrived at the peaceful lakeside, I couldn’t hide my admiration. Everything about his demeanor, his capabilities—none of it fit the picture I’d had in my head. I realized, maybe for the first time, how much I had underestimated him—and how much he had hidden.
