A Delicate Assurance
Before stepping away completely, I paused and turned back to the doctor. “Whatever it is, he’s okay,” I said, my voice firmer than I expected. I didn’t want to leave him worried—or worse, doubting Alan’s progress. The doctor gave a soft nod, seemingly reassured by my tone, but I could see the questions still flickering behind his eyes. My answer had satisfied protocol, but not the deeper inquiry.
As I exited the building, I carried both comfort and uncertainty with me. There was pride in Alan’s triumph, yet the mystery of it continued to gnaw at me. I’d chosen to protect his privacy, but that didn’t silence the part of me that still longed to understand the full truth. Alan was no longer just a friend—I realized he had become a living enigma, and I was still piecing together the pages of his unfolding legend.
