Unremarkable Recollections
When I asked about Alan’s recent behavior, his cousin’s voice was calm and without urgency. “I haven’t seen anything strange,” he said. “We mostly talked about usual stuff—family, work, the news.” His recollections were warm but ordinary, not the kind of dramatic insight I had hoped would unlock a part of Alan’s past. It was clear that whatever Alan had experienced, he had kept most of it to himself.
Still, I listened carefully, analyzing every detail. “He seemed fine. Happy, even,” the cousin added. It struck me then how easily Alan could’ve hidden the intensity of his transformation under the guise of normalcy. The conversation didn’t confirm anything new, but it painted a picture of a man who had quietly, and perhaps deliberately, kept his journey to himself. That silence only added to the mystique surrounding him.
