Xoloitzcuintli
The Xoloitzcuintli – pronounced “Show-low-eats-KWEENT-lee” and often simply called Xolo or Mexican Hairless Dog – is an ancient breed revered by the Aztecs as spiritual guides to the afterlife. Known as the “dog of the gods,” the Xolo is a vigilant watchdog and an extremely loyal companion. Its tough, smooth skin and high intelligence make it a truly unique breed.
However, this deep loyalty comes with territorial behavior and overprotective instincts. Its striking, mythical appearance can be intimidating – but it doesn’t have to be, provided it receives proper training. The Xolo needs consistent, expert guidance from a young age, which is why many experts only recommend it to experienced dog owners.
