In the early 20th century, a new, affordable material called celluloid came onto the market and was used to make hair combs. However, it had a massive drawback – it was highly flammable and could spontaneously explode when exposed to heat. People were literally setting themselves on fire while doing their hair.

Some unlucky users even died in such explosions. In the name of beauty, the celluloid comb showed that style can sometimes be deadly and dramatic all at once.
