Dying Teeth Black Was Seen as Beautiful

In some parts of Japan and Southeast Asia, black teeth were once a prized beauty standard. People dyed their teeth with a special glaze that also acted as a preservative, preventing rot and decay.

While it might look odd or spooky to modern eyes, blackened teeth symbolized health, elegance, and maturity. The tradition has mostly faded, but small communities still honor this unique custom today.
