People Would Dump Their Waste in Moats

Castles may look majestic, but their moats often held a dirty secret. Instead of clear water, many were filled with sewage and waste—human and otherwise. They essentially functioned as open-air toilets.

Without proper plumbing, servants would dump everything from food scraps to chamber pot contents into the moat. It’s hard to imagine anything less royal than the stench of a sewage-filled castle ditch.
