The Hawk That Sets Fires

Some raptors in Australia are known as “firehawks” for a reason. Species like the black kite and brown falcon have been observed picking up burning sticks from wildfires and dropping them elsewhere to intentionally spread flames. Why? To flush out insects, rodents, and lizards fleeing the blaze.

This chilling trick turns them into avian arsonists, using environmental chaos as a hunting tool. It’s one of the few known examples of animals manipulating fire for gain—and proof that predators will stop at nothing when hunger strikes.
