The Fish That Pretends to Be Cleaner Shrimp

The sabre-toothed blenny has a nasty trick. It mimics the appearance and dance of a cleaner shrimp or wrasse—a creature trusted by other fish to nibble parasites off their bodies. But instead of helping, the blenny bites off a chunk of fin or scale and zips away.

This bait-and-switch routine is pure deception. The prey fish often doesn’t realize it’s been conned until the blenny is long gone. It’s a con artist in gills and scales—fooling the system, dodging suspicion, and surviving by fraud.
