5. The Flying Bicycle
In 1921, a British inventor believed he could achieve flight using nothing but pedal power and faith. He created a bicycle with giant wings—then rode it off a dock. It plunged into the river. Repeatedly.
Undeterred, he added more wings, a propeller, and a prayer. Still no lift-off. Crowds gathered to watch, laughing and cheering. He never flew—but he did make history as one of the boldest (and wettest) inventors of his time.
