The War of the Whiskers
In the 14th century, two noble houses in France feuded over the proper way to wear facial hair. The House of Armagnac favored thick, full beards, while the Burgundians supported trimmed mustaches. What started as insults turned into duels, then political assassinations, and finally, regional conflict.
Though historians debate how much facial hair really influenced the war, period texts refer repeatedly to “offenses of grooming and pride.” In a time when honor and appearance were everything, even beards could bring swords to bear.
