Gulliver the Gentle Giant
Seen from above, this massive sculpture lying in the grass of Edinburgh, Scotland is called “Gulliver the Gentle Giant.” It might seem like just a quirky public art installation, but its origins are anything but ordinary. It was designed and built by Jimmy Boyle, a convicted murderer who found artistic redemption during his prison sentence. The story behind the statue adds a profound layer of meaning and interest to the already impressive sight.
Unveiled in 1976, it quickly became a local treasure, capturing the imagination of children and adults alike. Sadly, due to years of wear and the development of flood prevention plans, the sculpture was removed in 2011. Although no longer standing in its original spot, Gulliver lives on through drone photographs and digital archives, ensuring this unusual piece of cultural history isn’t forgotten.
