Choosing Silence

Instead of responding, I let the silence speak for me. I left the message unread, my phone face-down on the table, untouched. Ignoring him wasn’t easy, but it was powerful. He expected a reaction — maybe tears, maybe apologies — but he got nothing. And that nothing was everything.

Lisa called to check in, and I filled her in on the text. “He’s furious but clueless,” I said, trying to keep my voice calm. She laughed, a sound that lightened the heavy tension just a little. Together, we agreed — if he was panicking now, he clearly had something worth hiding. And we were ready to find it.
