#16: The Myth of Personal Space on Submarines

Personal space doesn’t exist on a submarine—crew members live shoulder to shoulder, packed tightly like sardines in a can. Sleeping, eating, and working all happen within arm’s reach of others, day in and day out. Over time, the constant closeness becomes second nature.

Submariners learn to move in sync, speak quietly, and respect invisible boundaries. What’s surprising is how strange the world feels after surfacing. The wide-open spaces on land can feel unnatural, even isolating. That adjustment speaks volumes about the unique bond formed.
