29. Arizona

Arizona has become a retirement magnet, thanks to its warm climate and gorgeous desert landscapes. About 1.4 million of its 7.5 million residents are 65 or older, and the state’s dry weather is ideal for those with respiratory or joint issues. Plus, it’s home to the Grand Canyon and countless outdoor recreation spots.

The sales tax is 5.6%, and while retiree income is roughly 10% below the national average, the cost of living is manageable in many areas. If you’re not a fan of sand and cacti, though, Arizona’s terrain might not appeal to you.
