ARE YOU READING THE MAP CORRECTLY?

Here we see a person sporting a world map on their body, and it makes you wonder which map served as the template. The common map used in the Western part of the world is often misleading. It’s based on the Mercator projection, developed in the 16th century by the European cartographer Mercator. This projection distorts the size of countries and continents relative to their actual proportions.

In many such maps, Africa is shown as significantly smaller than it actually is, which has been criticized as a distortion and even as racist. A more realistic representation of our planet is offered by the Gall-Peters projection from the 1970s. Nevertheless, this artistic representation is impressive.
