The 50 stars represent the 50 states, while the 13 stripes symbolize the original 13 colonies. The current form of the flag came about on July 4, 1960, when Hawaii became part of the United States.

In 1986, President Ronald Reagan gave the colors of the flag symbolic meaning. In a speech, he stated that white stood for pure intentions, red for courage, and blue for vigilance and justice. He believed these qualities were what Americans cherished in the human spirit.
