Ivory Rods

In parts of Central and West Africa, carved ivory rods functioned as a prestige currency. These rods were long, decorative, and often engraved with tribal markings. They served both as money and as a show of status—think cash that doubled as royal bling.

Due to their association with elephant hunting and elite craftsmanship, they were highly prized and usually passed down between generations. Unfortunately, their use also fueled poaching long before modern conservation efforts emerged.
