Born on May 26, 1949, Pam Grier is considered the first African American action star in cinema. Originally named Pamela Suzette Grier, she began starring in action films in the early 1970s. Grier rose to prominence through roles in movies like *Coffy* and *Foxy Brown*.

In *Coffy*, she plays a nurse seeking revenge on local drug dealers. Her character was described as “the baddest one-chick hit-squad that ever hit the town” and heavily promoted in the film’s trailer. The movie, containing both sensual and violent elements, was a commercial success.
