8. Alabama

Alabama is becoming increasingly popular for retirees thanks to its low cost of living—13% below the national average—and low taxes. It offers a strong mix of scenic nature and urban centers, including Birmingham, Huntsville, and Mobile. Sales tax is relatively low at 4%, and housing remains affordable.

However, Alabama does come with weather risks. Hurricanes, tornadoes, and humid summers are common, especially along the Gulf Coast. Still, for many, the beauty and budget-friendliness of the state outweigh the weather concerns.
