Mozart’s Scatological Letters

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart may be remembered for sublime compositions, but his private letters—especially to his cousin and sister—were filled with shockingly crude jokes about poop, flatulence, and bodily functions. He’d write things like, “I’ll lick your behind” or “Poop on your nose!”

Historians are still puzzled: Was it childish humor, a neurological tic, or just Mozart being irreverent? Whatever the cause, the letters reveal a jarring duality: the composer of divine symphonies also delighted in potty humor. It’s enough to make you wonder if Eine kleine Nachtmusik was ever followed by Eine kleine Fartmusik.
