Interestingly, her first film role was playing a model in the 1971 film “Klute.” This marked her initial foray into the film industry. Subsequently, Hamel transitioned from modeling to acting, landing a supporting role in the disaster film sequel “Beyond the Poseidon Adventure” (1979), as well as “When Time Ran Out” (1980).

Among Hamel’s diverse acting projects, her portrayal of Joyce Davenport in the enduring television series “Hill Street Blues” remains particularly noteworthy. This role earned her five Emmy nominations. It’s also worth mentioning that Hamel was a contender for the role of Kelly Garrett in the hit show “Charlie’s Angels,” though she ultimately turned it down. Throughout her career, Hamel contributed to various television movies and series, including recurring appearances in “Philly” and “Lost,” where she played Margo Shephard, the mother of main character Jack Shephard.
