Mr. Harris stood across from her, his gaze fixed and unflinching. “Miss Melissa,” he began, his voice lower than before, “I hope you don’t mind, but I have to ask you a personal question.” His tone wasn’t aggressive, but it carried a kind of formality that immediately caught her attention. Melissa nodded hesitantly, unsure where this was going. Then came the question: “Where did you get this ring?”
His eyes didn’t waver as he waited for her answer. There was an intensity in his expression she hadn’t seen before—something deeper than curiosity, almost like concern.
