Chalk Was Eaten and Used as Face Powder to Appear Pale

Victorian women were so dedicated to appearing pale that they actually ate chalk. It whitened their lips and made their complexion look ghostly, which was considered beautiful at the time. They also used chalk powder on their faces to enhance the effect.

What they didn’t know was how toxic and addictive this trend could be. The pursuit of beauty came at a high cost, with side effects that were anything but glamorous. Thankfully, the chalk fad eventually faded.
