Going to the Bathroom Was Very Different Back Then

In ancient Rome, going to the toilet was a social event. People would sit in rows on public benches without any partitions and chat while doing their business. Toilet paper didn’t exist either—they used cloth-wrapped sticks, leaves, or even sponges.

By today’s standards, the whole setup was unsanitary and deeply awkward. And pity the poor workers who had to clean those public latrines—probably one of the worst jobs in history.
