Livestock Bones (China)
In parts of ancient China, oracle bones—typically ox scapulae or turtle shells—were used for divination and sometimes as a form of tribute payment. Their inscriptions became an early form of writing, and in some areas, the bones held value akin to currency.
They weren’t used to buy groceries, but they were exchanged for services or used as offerings to curry favor with ancestors. It was spiritual economics: trading in bone to earn celestial credit. It’s safe to say they were worth more than their weight in karma.
