In 2008, a major scandal rocked China when baby formula contained dangerously high levels of melamine, a toxic chemical added to fake higher protein content.
The result was devastating: thousands of children suffered from kidney stones and even kidney failure. While trace amounts of melamine were also detected in the U.S., they were far below harmful levels. In China, however, the incident shattered public trust.
