“Kraken’s Hole” sounds terrifying, but it’s not a natural phenomenon – it’s man-made. It’s an artificial spillway constructed on the site of a California reservoir. Still sounds spooky, though. From above, the perfectly circular opening looks like a dark whirlpool. It’s designed to regulate water levels.
